SIC is a broad-based community advisory group comprised of parents, teachers, and community members established in every school. This advisory group works with the principal to cultivate a positive school environment supporting student success.

1. Mrs. Mudde – Do introductions and welcome to all new members.
2. Mrs. Mudde read the principal’s report and explained the school’s vision and mission and how the SIC goals align with the school’s vision, mission, and goals.
· This year’s focus will be on Literacy Improvement, building student capacity and building school culture.
3. Committee reports:
a. Information on what the SIC is and how it will function.
b. Discussion of goals for the 2023-2024 school year:
i. Reading/Literacy Improvement – organize various activities.
ii. Building student capacity – challenging students to read/write.
iii. Community involvement – Invite parents/community members to come in and share with students/do readings/get published authors to address students and motivate them to read.
4. Brainstorm ideas on how to implement goals – Ms. Brown and Ms. Kirkland came up with some great ideas and to reach out to the community to involve them.
5. Upcoming school events were announced.
6. The meeting was adjourned at 8:30 am.

- Notes from October 19, 2023 read – Mrs. Mudde
- Suggestions for activities throughout the year – Brainstorming
- The team came up with some wonderful ideas to help improve literacy schoolwide.
- Book club – doing book studies, discussions.
- Arrange fun readings after school/Saturdays – will draw in community members and parents.
- Offer short courses in writing cliff notes – published in library.
- Offer literacy readings with published authors within the community.
- Kona Ice – Punch Card Reward for reading a certain number of books – confirmed.
a. Students keep a log and write a short summary of each book read, parent sign off and discuss book with student.
b. Reward – Color changing cup from Kona Ice upon presentation of signed log and full punch card.
c. Kona Ice will display the winners on their electronic display monitor.
d. Publish winners on school website. - Create your own book.
- Discussed involving ELAR teachers – organize an essay contest.
- SIC Supported substitutes – get parents in to help as substitutes for one period – suggestion.
- Drop everything and read – once a week – school wide
- Hold student led conferences or Socratic seminars.
- Collaborations – Parents/Community members:
- Reading awareness – ML Students and parents – International language awareness and inclusion.
- ELAR/ML teachers/Parents from different countries and cultures.
- Funding projects:
- Reach out to community to establish partnerships focused on Literacy and improvement.

o Mrs. Mudde purchased books to gift as prizes/rewards for our star readers – Rewards for different categories.
o Toy stores/Supermarkets – sponsor games – electronic monopoly, chess sets etc. Ms. Kirkland asked for a letter to present to possible partners/sponsors that carries the school’s information – better community buy in.
o Schoology – SIC page where parents can be made aware of SIC involvement and activities. Do it Multilingual – parent buy in.
o Flyers for Website and Facebook to create interest and buy in from students for reading through the SIC.
o Reward Punch cards – Ms. Waters offered to help with reward punch card printing.
o Kona Ice – Student reward – color changing cup with ice for full punch card signed off by parent and teacher.
- Student names displayed on “Buy a Board” - List of names provided by school
o Need sponsors/partners to help with gift cards/coupons for food items/ice cream.
o Team will go out and seek community partnerships.
o Team to come up with name for SIC Reading Rewards Card – submit to Mrs. Mudde

o Mrs. Mudde received books to be written by 6th grade students from Student Treasures – This initiative will be piloted among the 6th grade students. Compilation of student stories to be included. If successful, this will be done schoolwide next year.

SIC Meeting Notes: April 12, 2024
1. Welcome - Hester Mudde

3. SIC Report to Parents is due on April 26th, 2024 - In progress and almost ready to be posted.
4. Teacher Breakfast on May 7th cancelled – lack of donations/interest.
5. Student Treasures – Publishing – 6th grade – Due date April 24th.
Students are working hard on their books. Will be finalized on 24th, checked on 25th and mailed to publisher on 26th.
6. Parents/Community outreach – Plan for next year – come up with ideas to engage and pull parents in as volunteers.
7. Partnerships/Sponsorships – work on list for 2024-2025 school year
